Hello, today I came with a post about Sunscreen 101. In the beauty world, you can see everyone stressing on the application of sunscreen. No matter how much treatments you get or apply high-end products, if you don’t use sunscreen then everything else doesn’t matter. I know like me many would have doubts about sunscreen. So in this post, everything that you should know about sunscreen will be explained in detail.

I have a set of questions that everyone has towards sunscreen and I will be answering each one of them. Without any further delay, let’s get straight to it.

Sunscreen 101

Why should you use sunscreen?

The sun exposes us to two types of radiations. UVA ray penetrates deep into our skin’s inner dermis layer causing premature aging, wrinkles and an increased risk of skin cancer. UVB rays are more intense rays that damage outer epidermis layer of skin. UVB rays are known for their reddening”sunburn” effect. So sunscreen protects skin from sun damage caused by harmful sun rays. 90% of visible signs of aging are due to SUN DAMAGE.

When you should use sunscreen?

No matter what day or time of the year it is, apply sunscreen. Up to 80%  of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin even on cloudy days. Even if you are going to stay at home you should apply sunscreen because rays can reach you through windows and doors even if not directly. From 10 am to 2 pm is when the sun’s rays are the strongest so avoid going out during that time or apply enough sunscreen to all exposed areas before stepping out.

When to apply sunscreen?

You should apply sunscreen right after your bath and 30 minutes before stepping outside. You should reapply sunscreen in every 3 hours. You need to apply sunscreen frequently while swimming too.

How to apply sunscreen?

Take a coin sized or enough amount of sunscreen and pat it over your face and neck. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas. Don’t ignore body because it is the larger area and out of laziness too. Just being generous while applying sunscreen won’t harm anyone.

How to choose a sunscreen?

Choosing a right sunscreen can be difficult. Look for sunscreen with a higher SPF. SPF is what determines how long can you stay under the sun without burning. If you can stay under the sun without sunscreen for 10 mins then you can stay with SPF of 30 for 300 mins. So it is necessary to reapply sunscreen. Also look for broad spectrum and  PA+++. The higher the plus, the higher the protection.

What ingredients should I look for in a sunscreen?

When you buy a sunscreen always look for ingredients that are present in it. Look for ingredients like Non-nano Zinc and Titanium Dioxides, Avobenzone or Mexoryl SX, Organic inactive ingredients. Look for these key words like paraben-free, non-comedogenic and broad spectrum.

Which sunscreen to avoid?

Sunscreens that contain Oxybenzone, Benzophone-3 because it can cause allergic skin reactions and may disrupt hormones. Another ingredient to avoid is Retinyl Palmitate. Try avoiding spray sunscreens as we may end up inhaling it and it may travel through our body and cause damage.Get sunscreens which are high in zinc oxide and antioxidants. It is good for acne prone skin. As Zinc oxide is soothing and gets rid of redness. It is safest and is always recommended as it protects from both UVA and UVB rays.

I think all your doubts for sunscreen are cleared. So don’t stand still and start using sunscreen right away. Extra tip – increase your protection by using sunglasses, hats and lip balm with SPF. Also keep an eye for shade always.  Also Stay hydrated!!!!!
